Frequently asked questions
-
There's no set number of sessions. Some people come for a shorter period to focus on something particular, while others find longer-term counselling helpful. We can talk about what you're hoping to get from counselling and review how things are going as we work together.
-
Sessions are usually weekly, but we can discuss what works best for you depending on your needs and circumstances and review this as we go along.
-
Yes, I offer online counselling. This can be a convenient option if you prefer to have counselling from home or find it difficult to attend in person. All you'll need is a private, quiet space where you feel comfortable talking and a reliable internet connection.
-
Our first session is an opportunity to talk about what's brought you to counselling and what you're hoping to get from it. I'll ask some questions to help me build a picture of your circumstances, and we'll briefly go over the practical arrangements, including confidentiality and our counselling agreement.
It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions, get a sense of how I work and see whether you feel comfortable working with me. There's no pressure to share more than you feel ready to, or to commit to a particular number of sessions.
-
It's important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor and that the support you receive is right for your needs.
From your initial enquiry onwards, I'll consider whether the counselling I offer is likely to be suitable for you. If I think another professional or service may be better placed to help, I'll discuss this with you and, wherever possible, help you explore other options.
Equally, if you decide at any point that counselling with me isn't right for you, we can talk about this together. There's no obligation to continue, and I can help you consider alternative support if you'd find that useful.
-
Yes. What you share in counselling is treated confidentially, and I take your privacy seriously.
Confidentiality is an important part of our work together, although there are some exceptional circumstances where I may need to share information, such as serious concerns about your safety or someone else's. Wherever possible, I would talk this through with you first.
As part of my professional practice, I also discuss my client work in supervision, without identifying you. We'll talk about confidentiality and its limits when we first meet, and you'll find more information in my counselling agreement and Privacy Notice.

If you're thinking about counselling, you're welcome to get in touch using the contact form or by emailing me directly. You can ask any questions you have or briefly tell me what you're looking for.
I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone call if you'd find it helpful to have a chat before booking. Alternatively, we can arrange a first session directly. I'll let you know about availability and send you the information you need beforehand.
